Aug 2016 SMS group completes amalgamation of some of its UK operations

In line with its overall global strategy, the SMS group (formerly SMS Siemag and SMS Meer) has recently completed an amalgamation of some of its UK operations, including companies such as SMS Meer (UK) Ltd, Parkegate Ltd and MRB Schumag Ltd.

The Managing Director of SMS group Technical Services (UK) Ltd, Richard Martin, has strengthened the UK management team with the recent addition of Alan Richards, who joins the group as Sales Director, having worked for many years in the aluminium and steel processing industry for companies such as Davy, Kvaerner, VAI, Siemens & FATA; and David Parkin who takes up the post of Engineering & Operations Director, having joined Parkegate Engineering soon after its inception in 1996.

A recent office move has seen the Poole based team relocate to Discovery Court on Wallisdown Road, where a modern, open plan facility provides an efficient environment for the UK’s flat products team to continue developing the rolling mill and processing line business from repair and modernisations right through to bespoke design and build of new mills and lines.

Based out of three sites in the UK, the business has a team of over 50 specialists across many engineering and technical disciplines across the metallurgical chain. The teams based in Chesterfield and Bishop Auckland will continue to develop the service, maintenance, repair and spares business for the entire UK organisation incorporating areas such as Long and Flat Products, Forging and Tube and Pipe. Supported by the SMS group in Germany, the UK operation is firmly established as a complete life cycle supplier for the steel and nonferrous metals industry.

Aug 2016  SMS group - Parkegate awarded Impol’s aluminium cold mill upgrade

After the success of winning the upgrade of Impol’s hot mill at Seval in Serbia back in February 2016, SMS group Technical services (UK) - Parkegate has now been awarded the contract by Impol to upgrade its Blaw Knox aluminium cold mill in Slovenia.

The 4-high mill of a non-reversing design was originally installed in 1966 and is now in need of modernization so as to ensure competitive production, improve product quality for their customers, as well as enhancing mill output flexibility.

The entry and exit coilers will be replaced to handle an increased coil weight from 5.5 tons at present to 11.2 tons after upgrading, leading to increased mill productivity. The strip width will be increased from the current 1,473 mm to 1,550 mm and the strip thickness will increase from the current 6.5 mm to 9.0 mm.

In addition to this, Parkegate will also supply a new belt wrapper which will allow both under and over coiling, and a new exit tucking roll, enabling Impol to produce tread-plate (alloys 1000, 3000 and 5000) for the decorative and construction markets. All new mill hydraulic equipment will also be supplied including high and auxiliary pressure power units and auxiliary pressure valve stands. A complete new mill automation system will be supplied by Hatch-IAS of the USA for both gauge and flatness control.

Due to the extensive modifications required for both the equipment and foundations, it is envisaged that the total mill shutdown period will be 4 weeks.
